GP weight loss injection prescriptions
From 23 June GPs can prescribe Tirzepatide injections(Mounjaro®). This does not mean prescriptions will be provided immediately. Patients with the greatest health risks will be prioritised.
The practice will identify eligible patients and contact them directly to discuss whether weight loss injections such as Mounjaro are the right option for them.
Patients do not need to contact the Surgery.
Who is eligible?
NHS England has set the eligibility criteria below you must meet all the criteria to qualify, anyone outside these criteria will not be eligible.
Am I eligible?
To access NHS weight loss injection prescriptions patients need to have a body mass index (BMI) of at least 40, or 35 or more for certain ethnic backgrounds, and at least four of the following five weight related comorbidities:
- Type 2 diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Heart disease
- Obstructive sleep apnoea
- Dyslipidaemia (abnormal cholesterol)
In addition , the patient must also agree to take part in additional lifestyle support as part of their treatment.
Both the patient and the GP will need to agree that weight loss medication is the most appropriate treatment option for them in order for a prescription to be issued.
